Coaching

My two passions are writing and distance running. For a long time, my career has been coaching writers, but I recently completed an MSc in Sports Coaching, and now I coach distance runners, too. It might seem an unlikely combination, but the principles are the same: it’s about getting you to your goal, maximising your enjoyment, and helping you take control of your journey. I’m proud of my record supporting authors towards commercial publication, but it’s equally important that you’re intrinsically satisfied and love the process of creating.

I’ve been coaching writers for over 15 years at the University of Oxford, the University of Gloucestershire, and many other community and education settings. After finishing a formal course, some writers still want occasional support with their projects; while other authors can find formal courses prohibitively expensive (one provider charged students £330 per hour of my time). So, increasingly, I also work independently with writers I know or whose projects are of special interest: I charge £40 per hour.

Every writer is different, so how we work varies from writer to writer, project to project. From concept development to line editing, I’ll fit in with whatever you need.

I don’t do contracts – the authors I work with just book in sessions as they require them using an online booking system. I ask for payment in advance of each new piece of work, but there’s no obligation beyond that. Meetings are online or, for local writers, in my hometown of Wallingford, England.

So, if we’ve worked together in the past, or if you think I might be particularly suited to supporting your project, I’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch via the contact form or book an initial chat here.
